Keep the conversation on the site until you are comfortable. There is no need to give out a phone number, an email address or a social media handle to arrange a coffee. A short video call before a first date confirms the person matches their photos, and takes ten minutes.

Warning signs worth taking seriously

Be wary of anyone who declines every video call, pushes hard to move to another app straight away, professes strong feelings within days, has a story that keeps changing, or who at any point mentions money — an emergency, an investment, a stuck payment, a favour. Nobody genuine asks a stranger for money. Report it and stop replying.

Arranging the first date
